What the hell is happening to Hillary?!
The one thing I never doubted about Hillary Clinton was her ability to run a tough, smart campaign. I expected that she would fight smart. I even expected that she would fight dirty. What I didn’t expect was for Hillary 08 to turn into a nightmarish version of the worst parts of Gore’s run for the Presidency.
Mark Penn is a nitwit. He may be a brilliant pollster, but anyone who advances the idea of running as the “inevitable” candidate in a season when it is so obvious that the voters are looking for something new and different is an ass. And then for him to have clients for whom he is actively working whose interests directly collide with the Clinton campaign is just… unprofessional.
But now we find out that Bill is on the other side of the Colombian deal, too.
I mean, sure, every husband and wife must disagree sometimes. And I sure hope that Hillary can keep her own positions even when she and Bill disagree. But when both your husband and your political guru are taking money from the Colombians to support the free trade agreement… well, you have to question the judgement of someone who ends up in that position. And you end up questioning the longevity of such a person’s alleged opposition to free trade agreements with Colombia. Well, you can almost hear a Clinton say, I was against it until it became clear I should be for it.
And then there is the problem of honesty. Who can honestly say that they were surprised when Hillary’s veracity became an issue in the campaign? I mean, her last name is Clinton. But knowing how the media would take even the slightest wobble in the truth, coming out with giant whoppers like the Bosnian sniper fire begins to just look suicidal.
I know it seems like Hillary is fighting to the death for the nomination. But, at the same time, doesn’t it seem a little like she would be happier if she lost? I mean, you don’t make mistakes like this… you don’t have political miscalculations like this… you don’t have such a crappy campaign strategy… you don’t try to change the rules every day as you go… you don’t tell lies when you know damn well the news organizations have the truth on video… you just don’t do these things if you want to be President.
Right?
